How To Sleep With A Partner Who Snores

April 24, 2023

After one too many 'I don't snore' arguments...

If you share a bed with a snorer, you know how frustrating it can be to get a good night's sleep. It can be difficult to open up that dialogue without embarrassing or potentially annoying your partner and it can lead to arguments and even resentment. While there is no guaranteed cure for snoring, there are some things you can do to minimise the noise and make it easier to sleep through the night for both you and your partner. Here are a few tips:

Try to block out or mask the noise

Earplugs are your friend. Invest in a good pair of earplugs that will block out the noise. You could also make use of a white noise machine. This can help to mask the sound of the snoring and make it easier to fall asleep.

Try sleeping on your side

This can help to reduce the noise of the snoring. Encourage your partner to sleep on their side as well. This will help to reduce the amount of snoring even further.

Use a humidifier

This can help to keep the air moist and reduce the amount of snoring. A cooler environment can help to reduce the amount of snoring.

Try snoring prevention products

Sleeping with your head elevated or sleeping on your side can help to reduce the amount of snoring. Bad habits can make this hard to naturally do however and there are a number of sleep correcting devices available for low cost. Elevated neck pillows are a popular option to open up the airways and reduce pressure on the neck and throat. Other devices commonly used include sleep correction belts. These help keep you on your side and learn how to reliably improve your sleeping position through a process known as positional therapy.

Try sleeping in different rooms

Never an ideal solution, there may come a time when it is more practical to sleep in different rooms if the noise is causing you to miss too much sleep. This is never an ideal situation as you may not have a suitable bed to hand and it can also lead to further embarrassment as well as tension.

Seek medical help

If the snoring is severe, you may want to
consult with a doctor to find out if there is a medical condition that is causing it. Snoring is rarely serious but it can lead to further sleep disorders and conditions, such as sleep apnea, so if the snoring continues, it is worth seeking out snoring treatment rather than simply ignoring the problem as this can lead to not only physical problems but also mental health problems through embarrassment and stress.
